Today, 15/10/2026. The Abia State Police Command inline with the vision of the Inspector General of Police on Professionalism, Intelligence led and community policing, successfully concluded its training on Crime Mapping, Crime Timing and Crime Nipping, aimed at strengthening intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention and operational efficiency.

The training brought together officers from various formations of the Command and representatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Homeland Security and vigilante groups to promote inter-agency collaboration and community partnership in addressing security challenges. Participants demonstrated their understanding through practical illustrations and expressed appreciation for the practical knowledge acquired.

The facilitators commended the Command for taking deliberate steps towards combating crime, noting that effective crime detection and apprehension require systematic planning, technical expertise and intelligence-driven approaches. They acknowledged the Command’s commitment to the professional application of structured crime prevention strategies and encouraged participants to translate the knowledge gained into improved operational outcomes.

In his address, the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, psc(+), mnips, JP, explained that the training was designed to move policing in Abia State beyond reactive responses to a proactive system where credible intelligence guides operational decisions, resources are strategically deployed, and criminal activities are identified and disrupted before they occur.

He explained that crime mapping identifies crime hotspots, crime timing reveals patterns and periods when criminal activities are more likely to occur, while crime nipping involves timely preventive measures to disrupt criminal plans. He charged participants to apply the knowledge acquired in intelligence gathering, crime analysis and operational planning.

The CP further directed Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Area Commanders and Tactical Team Commanders to ensure regular updates of crime maps across their respective areas of responsibility by the officers who were trained to do so, to support effective operational planning, strategic deployment and timely intervention. Certificates were presented to participants of the training.

The CP further appreciated the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, for his continued support towards the Command’s security initiatives. He stressed that all security operations must remain lawful and respect citizens’ fundamental rights, noting that effective policing is measured not only by arrests and cases recorded but also by crimes prevented, lives protected and public confidence strengthened.

The Abia State Police Command reiterates its commitment to strengthening intelligence-led policing, enhancing inter-agency collaboration and improved safety and security of residents across the State, in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.
